On July 31, 1715, a fleet of Spanish
treasure ships was cast upon the reefs and beaches of Florida's east coast between Fort
Pierce and Sebastian Inlet. On board and lost to the sea were vast amounts of gold, silver
and jewelry with precious gems, being carried back to Spain. Recovery attempts were made
by the Spanish and pirate raiders, but much remained and the wrecks were eventually
forgotten. Today, the beaches and waters still yield "pieces-of-eight" and gold
"doubloons" that were the pirate's "booty" of the period. |

Welcome to HRD On-Line. We're glad your here.
Historical Research & Development is our name and our business. A
Florida corporation, HRD was founded in 1988. Our primary
business activity is the excavation of Florida's Colonial Period
shipwrecks. We have had many successes in recovering treasure and
artifacts from the wrecks of the Spanish Plate Fleet of 1715. Some of
our past successes have been the recovery of 238 gold Spanish escudos
coins, called "doubloons," in one year, followed by the
incredible recovery of 821 Spanish gold coins in the very next year.
Another year saw the recovery of 7,000 silver reales, or
"pieces-of-eight." Recent years have seen the recovery of
many spectacular items of gold and silver jewelry, some items studded
with emeralds.
Our new projects include the further development of
our two sites under exploration contract to HRD by the State of
Florida, Division of Historical Resources, Bureau of Archaeological
Research. Our E-110 and E-132 sites are suspected to hold the remains
of 1715 period shipwrecks. All activities are monitored and regulated
by the State of Florida, Bureau of Archaeological Research. A
percentage of recovered items are donated to the State of Florida for
public display and information. Excavation work is performed in
accordance with archaeological guidelines set by the State of Florida
and archaeological reports of activities and findings are filed
yearly, at the end of the recovery season, to the State of Florida.
